Flags of the United Kingdom

All the following flags are made from flag bunting to MOD specification as used by the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy and are all sewn rather than printed. Printed flags are never used by the above. Etiquette requires all yachts to follow this centuries old  tradition. Parts of a flag are as follows. Left hand edge is known as the hoist, right hand edge the fly. The hoist has a rope & toggle sewn into the hem or pocket and this is used to attach to the halyard. The four quarters of a flag are known as cantons ie top left canton bottom right canton etc. An ensign such as the Red Ensign with an emblem in any of the cantons is known as a defaced ensign. Vexillology is the academic study of flags.

Flags are finished roped and toggled ready for flying. Brass Inglefield clips can be fitted at an additional cost from £7.99 per pair (1x60mm swivell, 1x30mm fixed) dependant on size of flag. Bear in mind that if Inglefield clips are used then matching clips must be attached to the halyard. Anti fray strips can  be added, again at a small addional cost (from £3 50) per flag. When quoting the size of code flags only the length is given from hoist to fly (left to right) as the proportions are pre determined by tradition, the M.O.D. and the Royal Yachting Assc., Numerals are usually, approximately 50% longer than letters. This is because they are so much norrower on the hoist and tapered,

To mark 60 years of The Queen's reign the Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012. The celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.
